Haven't been in ages, although used to frequent the SF Supermarket, TK Noodle, etc. on this side. For banh mi these days I usually brave the line across the street at Duc Huong. Met up with my friend for a light dinner at Huong Lan, saving room for desserts at Matcha Cafe Maiko AND Serenity Desserts across the way. I stuck with the Grilled Pork #7 Sandwich, everything on it, and water. The jalapeno was a spicy one for sure! Did not try any of the boba drinks or noodle/soup dishes this time. The sandwich was ready quickly, plenty of tables for indoor seating. Lots of other spring rolls and Vietnamese things to grab-and-go, and a small grocery section and fridge of canned drinks such as young coconut juice. Navigating parking can be stressful here, and I would not go to this area after dark because South Sac, but this was a satisfying and affordable meal!
Huong Lan Sandwiches is always a go-to spot when I want something fast, delicious and well-priced. In terms of their sandwiches, their meat quality is one of the best in Sacramento. I come whenever I want a quick nem nuong cuon or pho fix. Their pate chaud is yummy too! My boyfriend's favorites are their rice plates and they do a good job at making their egg loaf so so moist! Plenty of indoor seating, a restroom is available and they're usually quick. A holy-grail in my book, indubitably.
I've gone to Huong Lan for many years and it has been so consistent that it's my preferred choice for banh mi in Sacramento. I typically order the #1 which is the cold cut combo. It has a good balance of meat, pickled veggies, mayo, and pate. The bread is soft and has a slight crisp as well. Huong lan sandwiches are in my top 5 favorite foods (which is meaningful cuz I'm constantly eating). I've flown through airports with the sandwiches to enjoy later (ziplocked up of course to lock in the delicious smells). Even the TSA agents have joked about taking my sandwich for themselves. Lots of great to go goods as well with very reasonable prices! Feels family friendly and quiet dine in options.
Huong Lan has been my family's go to shop since I was a child for bánh mì, chế, and nem. The staff are so kind, humble, and always serve with efficiency. This was my first time sitting in and trying their noodle soups. I had the bun bo hue with this spicy pastry (I don't know the name) and my mom had hu thiếu. Very authentic and fresh Vietnamese food. Come support this small business if you are in Sacramento, their menu has a variety of options.
You can dine in or take out. I moved to a different state and come back to bring home a bunch of food from here every time. It's so good. Highly recommend. Gets better each time I come! Service is good but I would recommend ordering on the phone if you're in a rush. The crowd comes in waves you never know when you come and the line is out the door or not. Accepts cash and card! A cute mom and pop location
Great food for a great price! We stopped by on Christmas Eve, and it was just exactly what we needed. The service was quick and friendly, and there was constantly a line out of the door for the other goods they sold in the restaurant. I got the pho with rare steak, flank, and meatballs. The soup was warm and comforting, and the portion was generous. The herbs we were provided with were fresh, I love adding jalapeños and Thai basil to my soup. We got the pork bánh mì to go for dinner, and it was so good! The bread was crispy and chewy, the lemongrass pork had a nice charred taste to it, the pickled daikon/carrots cut through the richness of the pork and mayo, and the cilantro and jalapeños gave a great freshness to the sandwich. It was sweet, salty, sour, and savory, and delicious! I look forward to coming back here again.
